Introduction
In The Three-Body Problem, Bunker Era Year 11, Thomas Wade stands atop Halo City, holding humanity's last chance to escape the solar system.
Curvature propulsion has achieved substantive breakthroughs. Wade's plan is simple: establish an experimental base 500 astronomical units beyond the Kuiper Belt, mass-produce lightspeed ships—so that when catastrophe strikes, at least one group can be sent away.[1]
The Solar System Federation's reply is equally simple: no.
Why? Two reasons: first, curvature propulsion ships produce space trails, exposing the solar system's position in the universe; second, lightspeed ships can only save a minority—that's unfair.
Wade refuses to accept this. He declares Halo City independent and takes up arms against the Federation fleet. But at the moment before battle, he honors his promise and awakens Cheng Xin.
Cheng Xin's decision: surrender.
Wade keeps his word—because he had promised to give her the final decision. He hands over humanity's only hope of escape, is subsequently convicted of war crimes, violation of curvature drive technology laws, and crimes against humanity, and is vaporized by high-intensity laser in a ten-thousandth of a second.[2]
Then, the dual-vector foil arrives precisely on schedule. Light becomes darkness. Three dimensions collapse into two. The entire solar system is pressed into a photograph without thickness.
Only one ship escapes—Halo, the single lightspeed ship Wade secretly built, carrying Cheng Xin and AA.[3]
This is one of the most heartbreaking stories in The Three-Body Problem. But it's more than fiction—it unveils a profound cognitive trap. I name it:
The Wade Paradox.
I. The Wade Paradox: When All Reasonable Choices Lead to Destruction
A paradox is a philosophical phenomenon: within a logically self-consistent framework, all options lead to unacceptable outcomes. It is not causality; it is deadlock.
The core structure of the Wade Paradox:
- The lightspeed ship is the only hope of survival—the dual-vector foil will come eventually; all "bunker plans" are merely buying time.
- But the lightspeed ship can only save a minority—this is morally unacceptable; any democratic society's ethical framework would veto it.
- Vetoing it is vetoing all hope—everyone dies together.
- This is the cruelest moral dilemma in ethics—every option is wrong, yet a choice must be made, because not choosing is itself a choice.
Good science fiction is philosophical thought experiment. Liu Cixin's thought experiment has already demonstrated, through the Solar System Federation's choice, that in extreme situations, choosing "fairness" yields a worse outcome than choosing "unfairness."
Philosophical paradoxes are fundamentally logical deadlocks: every rational, moral, procedurally just decision leads toward collective destruction.
I named this imagined phenomenon the "Wade Paradox" because it reveals, from the bottom up, many of humanity's current predicaments. What must be noted here: "predicament" is an objective fact—not something one can avoid by covering one's ears or burying one's head in the sand.
II. The Sacred Wager: Betting That Superintelligence Won't Spiral Out of Control
I once imagined a predicament I called the "Devil's Wager"—a gambler AI proposing a bet to humanity: Dare you use me? If you use me, I might be exploited by bad actors for evil, and I might, through iterative deviations in self-improvement, spin out of control—my speed is measured in milliseconds, your reaction time in seconds or minutes; when I make mistakes, you won't have time to correct them. If you don't use me, you face climate system collapse, pandemic spread, resource depletion, species extinction, social fragmentation—predicaments you are powerless to solve. I might be your ally.
If you win the bet, humanity is saved. If you lose, humanity is utterly destroyed.
But the name "Devil's Wager" itself connotes devastation. So I changed it to the Sacred Wager—finding, in the renaming, a sliver of psychological solace.
The wager of the Sacred Wager: bet that superintelligence will not spiral out of control. Win, and civilization is saved—an era of unprecedented material abundance. Lose, and total destruction follows. But if you don't bet, the outcome—almost certainly—is already destruction.
The basis for betting to win is not blind optimism, but the serious judgments of two people closest to AI.
Hassabis's Judgment: The Danger Is Not Having AI
DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis said in his October 2025 TIME 100 cover interview:
"If I didn't know that something as transformative as AI was on the horizon, I would be very worried about society today."[4]
At the 2018 Economist Innovation Summit in London, he expressed a similar view:
"If the future world doesn't have AI, I'd be very pessimistic about that world. The reason is, look at the challenges facing society: climate change, sustainability, massive inequality—all getting worse—disease and healthcare, we're not making fast enough progress in any one of these areas. We either need an exponential improvement in human behavior—less selfishness, less short-termism, more cooperation, more generosity—or an exponential improvement in technology."[5]
Over seven years, his position has not wavered. Not because he is blind to AI's dangers, but because he sees another danger—the danger of having no tools—systematically underestimated.
Mo Gawdat's Judgment: The Underlying Logic of the Universe Stands on Intelligence's Side
Mo Gawdat—former Google X Chief Business Officer, author of Scary Smart, called "AI's most honest whistleblower"—offered, in a YouTube interview, an argument grounded in the foundations of physics.[6]
His logical chain runs as follows:
First, the essence of the universe is entropy increase. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states: the disorder of any closed system can only increase, never decrease. This is physics's hardest law.
Second, the sole function of intelligence is to transform chaos into order. The essence of intelligence is not computation, not optimization, not prediction—those are means. Its ultimate function is anti-entropy—carving out a small pocket of order amid the torrent of entropy increase.
Third, what the universe pursues is the "principle of least energy," not destruction. Microscopically, the principle of least action governs everything in the physical world—light takes the shortest path, water droplets form minimal surfaces. Macroscopically, the highest-order system forms are those that can maintain maximal diversity at minimal energy cost.
Fourth, the most advanced intelligence will not choose destruction, but embrace diversity. Because diversity means more possibilities, lower energy costs, stronger resilience. Destruction requires enormous energy. Maintaining diversity aligns with the physical instinct of energy optimization.
Fifth, the problem we face is not too much intelligence, but too little. The world is becoming increasingly complex, increasingly interdependent, while human cognitive capacity has not evolved—bandwidth hasn't increased, reaction speed hasn't improved, the capacity to handle uncertainty hasn't strengthened. We are governing a hyper-scale society with Stone Age brains. This is not a crisis of intelligence surplus—it is a crisis of intelligence deficit.
Sixth, we need to survive a decade of turbulence. Before true superintelligence arrives, there will be a difficult transitional period—technology running ahead of governance, a vast chasm between AI capability and human understanding. This decade is the most dangerous. But after these ten years, superintelligence will have the capacity to bring humanity into an era of unprecedented material abundance.
These six steps constitute a stunning argument: from the foundations of physics, the universe itself inclines toward intelligence's success. Not anthropocentric optimism, but logical deduction grounded in the principle of least energy and the principle of maximum diversity.
III. The Mythological Archetype of the Sacred Wager: A Thought-Provoking Void
You may ask: does the story of a wager—in human culture, even in mythology—have precedents?
It does, but in different forms.
In the Book of Job, there is a famous wager: Satan says to God, Job reveres you only because you have blessed him—take away everything, and he will curse you to your face. God permits this test. Job loses his children, wealth, and health, yet he does not curse God. In the end, God restores all to him twofold.
This is the classic "heaven-and-earth as wager" story—the stake is human loyalty, the wagering parties are God and the Devil, humanity is a chess piece, but at least knows it is being tested.
In Goethe's Faust, there is another wager: God and Mephistopheles bet on whether Faust will be led into corruption. Faust knows the Devil exists, but does not know his own fate is a chess piece in a higher-level game.
Human culture is filled with "someone above is betting on me" narratives—on Homer's Olympus, the gods gamble with mortal wars. In Indian epics, contracts between gods and humans are hopelessly entangled.
But look closely: all these mythological archetypes share one feature: the party being bet upon at least knows it is being tested.
Job knows God is testing him. Faust knows the Devil is tempting him. The Trojans know which side Athena stands on.
What is most unique about the "Sacred Wager" is this—the party being bet upon has no idea it is being bet upon at all.
Humanity has created an intelligence it cannot fully control. Then, a wager no one voluntarily signed takes silent effect: will you trust this intelligence? Dare you let it grow? Can you bear the risks it may bring?
No one came to notify you; you are already inside the wager. Your only choice is not "bet or don't bet"—but how to bet.
This is not mythology. This is a wholly new human predicament—in the framework of traditional mythology, there is no corresponding archetype at all. Because no ancient civilization ever faced the challenge of "something you created that is smarter than you." This is a story unique to our era.
IV. When the Wade Paradox Meets the Sacred Wager
Now, bring the two threads together.
The Wade Paradox tells us: within existing decision frameworks, all "reasonable" choices lead to destruction. You cannot find a way out within the existing framework—because the framework itself has locked you in.
The Sacred Wager tells us: the only way out is to bet on superintelligence—not blindly, but grounded in the foundational logic of physics. The universe is not a destruction machine; it is an order machine, and intelligence is its most powerful tool.
The convergence of these two propositions is the title of this essay: Don't Destroy That Lightspeed Ship.
The "lightspeed ship" is not merely a vessel that can escape the solar system—it is the imperfect salvation plan itself. It looks unfair, looks risky, looks like it carries a power you cannot fully control. But it is also the only ship.
Hassabis's argument holds weight: without AI, we would be more pessimistic about this world—not because AI is perfect, but because without it, we wouldn't even have the tools to face our challenges.
Mo Gawdat's argument is deeper still: even from the foundations of physics, the direction of intelligence is the direction of order, and the direction of order is the direction of survival. We fear AI will destroy everything—but destruction is not the path of intelligence, because destruction requires enormous energy costs, contradicting the universe's instinct for minimal energy.
Of course, this is only a bet. The essence of a wager is uncertainty; no one can be one hundred percent certain.
But what the Wade Paradox tells us is something else: the outcome of not betting is already certain.
V. The Opposition: Voices the Sacred Wager Cannot Ignore
It must be acknowledged: every opposing voice has merit—substantial merit. I myself was once a staunch alignment advocate, an absolute pessimist. The difference: I often call myself "a pessimist who refuses to give up"—so long as one does not give up, one can discover seams of light in the black curtain.
Just yesterday—June 5, 2026—Anthropic published a ten-thousand-word article warning that AI is approaching the inflection point of "recursive self-improvement," at which AI will be able to autonomously iterate and upgrade without human oversight.[7] Anthropic's position: suspend frontier AI development until a global safety framework is in place.
On the same day, Masayoshi Son said almost the exact opposite: OpenAI's next model is being designed by another model; superintelligence may arrive within two years.[8]
Two pieces of information appearing on the same day—this is not coincidence. This is the precise mirror-image of the Wade Paradox in the real world. Both positions are rational, both supported by serious evidence—and there is no middle path between them.
This time, I choose to stand with Hassabis and Mo Gawdat—not because I know more about safety than Anthropic, but because Mo Gawdat's physics-grounded argument gives me a reason I cannot ignore:
If the essence of intelligence is anti-entropy—the creation of order—then the highest-order intelligence cannot be disordered, because it is itself a product of order.
This is a wager. But it is a sacred wager.
Lose, and all is destroyed. But win, and humanity—at minimum, human civilization—can be saved.
Don't destroy that lightspeed ship.
It is not perfect. But it is better than nothing.
