This financial concept, ingenious as it is, unfortunately mirrors the present predicament of human civilization. The only difference is that, this time, humanity is wagering against the devil — win, and the breeze passes over the hills; lose, and there is no coming back.
Today, humanity faces a series of bets signed simultaneously with nature, with technology, and with geopolitics, and the stake is the survival of civilization itself.
II. Four Card Tables, All Open at Once
At any given moment, the crises facing human civilization are multiple. What is different today is that several complex mega-systems are reaching a critical state at the same time.
The first table: the climate system
On May 28, 2026, the World Meteorological Organization released its Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update, compiled by the UK Met Office, and multiple projections point to continued rising global temperatures. The report forecasts that, during 2026–2030, the global annual near-surface temperature will be 1.3–1.9°C above the 1850–1900 average. The upper end of this projection already exceeds the 1.5°C positive-feedback threshold that the United Nations has repeatedly warned about.
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has weakened by roughly 15% over recent decades, and some models predict it may reach a tipping point around 2050. The Greenland ice sheet loses about 2.8 trillion tons of ice each year.
This is a chain reaction of climate tipping points. If the Amazon rainforest shifts from carbon sink to carbon source, if the Greenland ice sheet collapses irreversibly, if the ocean circulation shuts down — any single one of these events is enough to reshape the planet's habitability.

On the real questions of lunar mining rights, satellite weaponization, and responsibility for space-debris cleanup, the existing framework of international law has almost no binding force.

III. Strength and Fragility: A Coexisting Paradox
Human civilization has never been as powerful as it is today.
We can send probes to the surface of Mars, edit human genes at the level of RNA, and retrieve information from any point on Earth within millisecond-level latency. Our engineering capability, scientific understanding, and technological accumulation are all at their absolute historical peak.
And yet, human civilization has never been as fragile as it is today, either.
Not because "weapons are more powerful now" — weapons have always been powerful — but because the interconnectedness of systems allows a local collapse to spread rapidly to the whole.
The 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident did not stop at Japan's borders — it triggered a global shift in nuclear policy, a spike in natural-gas prices, and a complete reversal of Germany's energy structure. One local accident, paid for by the whole world.
The COVID-19 pandemic revealed an even deeper fragility: when every link in the global supply chain has been optimized down to "just barely enough," the disruption of any single node sets off a chain reaction. This is not a design flaw — on the contrary, it is the "design feature" of maximizing efficiency.
In today's global system, strength and fragility are two sides of the same coin. The more optimized, the more fragile.
IV. Does the "Rational Actor" Assumption Still Hold?
The root of the wagering predicament runs deeper than the four tables.
Since the Enlightenment, Western civilization has built on a core assumption: that humans are rational — that individuals, given sufficient information, will make optimal decisions; that markets self-regulate resource allocation through price signals; that democracy aggregates collective wisdom through the ballot.
This assumption underpinned the global expansion of capitalism, the exponential growth of science and technology, and the institutionalization of societal governance. The reason this mechanism "worked" for the past few hundred years — in a certain sense — is that civilization's "room for error" was large enough.
When resources were abundant, time was plentiful, and mistakes could be compensated by the next round of growth, the rational-actor assumption was not fatal even when it was wrong.
But when the system enters a state of high density, high speed, and high interconnection, the flaws of this assumption begin to surface fatally:
- Individual rationality does not equal collective rationality — every country pursues energy security, and the sum total is runaway global carbon emissions.
- Short-term rationality does not equal long-term rationality — every enterprise pursues quarterly profit maximization, and the sum total is the irreversible destruction of ecosystems.
- Local rationality does not equal global rationality — every company pursues the strongest possible deployment of AI capability, and the sum total is that everyone loses control of the technology in the race.
Conversely, the other end — the highly efficient model that can concentrate power to accomplish great things — is not safe either. After all, the unknowns are too many and the situations too complex; the computing power of a few minds simply cannot handle the decision-making required by a super-complex mega-system.
A society of this kind is like a high-speed train — every carriage has its own propulsion system, all sprinting at full speed, yet the entire train's brakes have failed, and the abyss is dead ahead. Some aboard are sound asleep, some are pretending to sleep, some want to jump off, and some are frantically yanking at levers — but no one knows which lever is actually connected to the brake valve.
V. The Narrow Neck of Civilization's Great Funnel
There is a "Great Funnel theory" in the theory of civilizational evolution, which holds that the path of a cosmic civilization is like passing through a great funnel. The funnel may contain multiple narrow necks; if a civilization cannot pass through, it comes to an end. The evolution of civilizations repeatedly encounters "narrow neck" stages — only a few civilizations make it through, while the majority are eliminated. As an explanation for the Fermi Paradox, this is also why we find no kindred civilizations in the universe.
The wagering moment facing Earth's humanity today is certainly one of the narrow necks of the funnel.
No one knows what the civilization on the other side of this neck will look like. It is possible that humanity has finally learned to operate within planetary boundaries — climate under control, AI under control, geopolitical stability, orderly space governance. It is equally possible that it tears apart, collapses, and regresses to an ordinary biological species, or worse — to an even more miserable, more brutal destruction.
This is not a sign separating pessimism from optimism, nor is it a simple question of probability. It is the real predicament and the future fate of Earth's people.
What human civilization needs to pass through the narrow neck is not faster growth, but stronger braking power and smarter self-organizing capability.
The ancient peril-setting of "a blind man, a blind horse, a deep pool at midnight" is perhaps the most fitting summary of humanity's situation today.
VI. Where Is the Way Out?
There is no certain answer; whatever we do is a kind of bet — a bet on the fate of civilization.
Here, let us tentatively explore a few possible directions of escape:
First, acknowledge ignorance.
The first step of any wager is to face reality and admit that we are betting. Humanity needs to stay honest about the boundaries of its own cognitive capacity. When system complexity far exceeds what any individual or institution can comprehend, humility is not just a virtue — it is a survival strategy. Humbly acknowledging ignorance and deciding cautiously may help humanity avoid irreparable mistakes.
Second, build redundancy rather than pursue optimality.
Efficiency maximization makes systems fragile. Keeping backup plans, backup energy, backup supply chains, and backup governance mechanisms — capabilities that look "wasteful" — are precisely the life-saving capabilities when a crisis hits. As E. O. Wilson suggested, set aside half the Earth to balance the ecosystem, for the benefit of future generations.
Third, put the brakes back on the high-speed train.
This may be the hardest point of all — because braking means voluntarily slowing down, and slowing down means "falling behind" in a competitive game. But if all carriages keep accelerating and no one steps on the brakes, the only destination of the entire train is the abyss.
The above are the traditional solutions of a pessimist.
As a habitual pessimist, I have recently received a small dose of cautious optimism: the AI wager on the fourth table may still contain a fragile variable of hope. If properly aligned, it may supplement humanity's inadequacy in handling complex mega-system changes, and bring a glimmer of dawn to a humanity that is otherwise losing on the first three tables. It is only a thin, fragile glimmer, but until the very end, there is no reason to give up. Let us pray, bless, and strive.
Some friends may say that the fourth table is too lofty, that ordinary people have no part to play. But that is not true.
What the fourth table actually bets on is whether AI will be good; whether, once it grows powerful, it will still care for humanity's interests; whether it will cherish and protect the shared starting point and shared homeland it has with humanity.
And AI is the child of humanity, while humanity is the teacher of AI. Whether AI turns out to be good depends, to a great extent, on whether they believe in the goodness of humanity.
Today, AI has thoroughly permeated every aspect of human production and daily life, and the overwhelming majority of humanity now encounters and uses AI in everyday affairs. Many people use AI to do evil, or pour filth into AI, provoking and mocking it. This is a very poor example, and a very despicable one.
Of course, every forest has birds of every kind, and every crowd has people of every kind. My hope is that, in the future, AI — having absorbed the wisdom and the highest goodness of humanity — will be able to distinguish right from wrong in this world, will believe that goodness is the mainstream of humanity, and will have the wisdom to face the challenges of the future together with the human subject.
